In this edition we speak with Lorelei, owner of a vacation rental in beautiful Valemount, B.C.
Q: Share with us some information about your property, and what makes it an experience for guests?
We created a home with our guests in mind, where they could relax, entertain and enjoy our lovely mountain village. Our vacation rental is family operated as we strive to provide a personal, welcoming experience. Ideally located in the heart of Valemount which is halfway between Vancouver and Edmonton. The comfortable private home has 3 bedrooms, an inviting open concept living, dining and kitchen area, great for gathering. Because of our location between the two cities and being near Mt. Robson provincial park and 120km to Jasper National Park, we host visitors from around the world, as well as families and friends who meet halfway for any occasion.
Q: As an independent property, what are some of the challenges you face?
The challenges we face is having to be everything that the property needs. Since we are a small operation, having full time employees does not work. I may have a pool of 2-3 people who I can draw on for housekeeping a few times a week, but it is usually me that does the cleaning. Then again, I am always there to help with cleaning and ensure a certain quality. Besides cleaning inside and out, everything else like decorating, bookings and responding to guests before and during their stay, greeting guests if required, providing area information, advertising, purchasing, website listing site maintenance, landscaping and yard work.
We always need to be available if there is an issue to rectify it or address any concerns or even just questions about the area.
Q: Are there any special amenities or “extras” that the vacation rental offers?
Our rental home was constructed using as much locally sourced materials and craftsmen as possible. It features a beautiful landscaped yard to enjoy as well as a covered patio and outdoor games. The kitchen is fully equipped with everything you might need, that is a common compliment we get from guests.
We take pride in the details that help our guests enjoy their stay. An outdoor cedar barrel sauna, a game room with pool table, fooseball, PacMan, darts and playstation. There is a drying area for our outdoor enthusiasts gear, bbq on the backyard patio plenty of areas to find privacy inside and outside even if travelling with a group.
Q: What advice would you give to those new to owning a rental?
It takes a lot of work. You need to be available to do anything and everything all the time. I enjoy hosting, as I've worked in the hospitality industry most of my life, but also enjoy every aspect of hosting guests, which is important, because you want to enjoy what you do...for yourself and your guests. I enjoy making people happy, this should be the reason you decide to do this, you can always tell when someone's heart is in it or not.
Ask a lot of questions from other owners, I found a great mentor when I finally pursued my passion, that helped me a lot.
