Glynmill Inn | Corner Brook, Newfoundland

Steeped in the Values of Yesterday

Glynmill Inn has been welcoming guests for a century

The Glynmill Inn’s decades of tradition began a century ago in Corner Brook, Newfoundland and has been going strong ever since.

In the early 1920s Armstrong-Whitworth Company Ltd decided that their senior staff required living quarters that would enable them to feel at home while they were supervising construction of what was up to that time the largest project ever undertaken in the history of paper making.

Andrew Cobb, a Halifax architect designed the Tudor style ‘Staff House’ in 1923.

On May 16, 1924, Bill Cossitt and three employees of Picking & Watson, water & sewage contractors from Halifax, signed the register.

On June 30, 1924, Sir Glyn West, chairman of Armstrong-Whitworth Company Ltd. officially opened the hotel.

The amenities provided were very advanced for that period. They included two dining areas – The Carriage Room and a special dining room for VIPs. There were two bars – The Tudor Room and a ‘members only’ club – Blomidon. The hotel also had tennis courts and a well-stocked livery. Modern conveniences included laundry and vacuum cleaners, and an apparent inexhaustible supply of electricity.

The hotel was acquired by Atlantic Inns Limited in 1974. At this time a new wing was added that had additional modern rooms, conference, seminar and convention facilities which were incorporated into the original structure.

“The result of this renovation was a property which reflects a contemporary spirit while retaining its rich, traditional heritage,” shares General Manager, Connie Rose.

The Heritage Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador recognized this traditional heritage and designated the Glynmill Inn a registered heritage structure on March 31, 2001.

Glynmill Inn has five levels which include the basement, main level and three floors of rooms.

It has 78 rooms – four executive suites, 11 king junior suites, three king bedsitting suites, nine junior suites, one queen junior suite, and 50 standard rooms.
