Tell us a little more about your property, and who is your typical clientele?
173 High Street is above two retail stores in beautiful downtown Southampton, Ontario. We are blessed to have, believe it or not, the number one non chain olive oil and vinegar store in Canada and it is in the top 10 in North America. It is called The Southampton Olive Oil store.

The other store is the, oh so talented Carol Norris, who is a film only photographer and calls her store The Lighthouse Gallery. She offers her stunning nature pictures as well as occasional pieces for the home.

We offer three rooms of privacy, luxury and comfort. Each room has a king size bed and a separate bathroom, as well as it’s own climate control. Two of our rooms have walk in showers. The rooms are on the second floor of a typical rural Ontario commercial building. With no elevator at the property, we say on our website that “we will gladly carry your luggage, but you you have to be able to climb 20 step to get to your room”.
Our wonderful guests tend to be boomers or the children of boomers. They appreciate what we offer, and with the new addition of the sun deck they have a spot of comfort after a long day at the beach.
Q: Your property has consistently received great reviews on Booking.com. Tell us what it takes to achieve highly rated reviews on a consistent basis?
173 High Street is not an inexpensive place to stay. If we lose any points at all, it is that we sometimes receive a “fair value” rating. Fortunately, that doesn’t happen all that often. We are very proud of our rating and zealously do everything to protect it. So what do our guests say?
Number 1 is cleanliness. We wash, dust and vacuum everything all the time. Small things like wiping door handles, switch plates, and switches. Even the inside of lamps. You’ll see from your records the we replace your best towels as soon as they don’t feel new. We touch up paint, and try our best to make our rooms look new for each guest.
Number 2 is sleep. We buy the best pillow top mattress we can, and then we add your wonderful pillow top mattress cover. It’s amazing that at least 60% of our guests comment on how comfortable the bed is. Last year we sold 10 covers to our guests to take home! We also spend a lot of money on 100 percent cotton sheets and pillowcases, and we iron them before reinstalling them. To spoil our guests a bit, we place couple of chocolate covered caramels from a local chocolatier on the pillow on arrival. This draws favourable comments as well as advertises for a local business.
Number 3 is how we greet our guests upon arrival. We spend as much time as our guests want telling them about the hotel, it’s history and a little bit about ourselves. We also brag about our beautiful town, our beaches, the local restaurants and sites to see!
