Truly Independent | Falcon Trails Resort
Welcome to the third edition of “Truly Independent”
We recently spoke with Caleigh at the Falcon Trails Resort in Falcon Beach, Manitoba.
Q: Share with us some information about your property, and what makes it an experience for guests?
Falcon Trails is a little forest resort on the shores of Falcon and High Lake in the Whiteshell Provincial Park.
Hand-crafted lakefront cabins. Private hot tubs, remote hike-in eco cabins, docks, beaches, canoes, hiking, biking and ski trails, wood fireplaces, and the Falcon Ridge alpine ski slopes just a few steps away.
This is no chain hotel resort. Falcon Trails was created by and continues to be owned and operated by the Christie/Hamilton family. This difference is immediately apparent in the feel of the place, the characters you encounter during your stay and the authenticity of the product.
Q: As an independent property, what are some of the challenges you face?
From day one, the product that we have created is truly unique. There has been no road-map along the way to tell us where we need to go next. What product we should use to clean our laundry, when we should replace one of the docks, who we should order our next set of ski boot rentals from. Every business and operating decision we've made is reflective of our unique situation. Though at times this approach can feel inefficient, and we might feel like we want someone else to make these decisions for us, it keeps our work interesting! We rely heavily on the support from industry organizations and businesses such as True North to help us along the way in making these business decisions.
Q: Are there any special amenities or “extras” that the resort offers?
Falcon Trails Resort is full of opportunities for our guests to experience the beautiful boreal forest in which we live. That is probably the number one feature that sets us apart from other establishments. We hand out bird-seed at check-in so guests can watch and listen to the song-birds during their stay. We have two authentic, wood burning Swiss log saunas that sit right on the shore of the lake. There are over 30 kilometres of cross-country ski, biking and hiking trails that take off right from the parking lot of our resort. Our private hot tubs are all situated in the cabins' outdoor screened in porches. We have ample canoes available to our guests, complimentary with their stay. The grounds have mostly been left untouched to preserve the natural flora and fauna of the area. The firewood in our sheds, used to keep our cabins warm, is all harvest in the local area. All this plus a delightful little ski hill that offers alpine skiing, snowboarding, tubing, a cozy vintage chalet, food and drink, live music every weekend and a winters worth of amazing festivals, races and other events to keep the place hopping.
Q: What advice would you provide to owners or managers of an independent resort, especially during this challenging time?
Turn to your community for support. Talk to your fellow business owners and locals, make connections with them and offer your own support in return in whatever form that comes in. By staying connected and active within your community you ensure stronger resilience in times of trouble.
