Truly Independent | Cedar & Steam
Welcome to the fourth edition of “Truly Independent”
Today we speak with Brandy, founder of the award winning Cedar & Steam spa in Calgary, Alberta.
Q: Share with us some information about the Cedar & Steam Spa, and what makes it an experience for guests?
The idea of the Spa came from looking for ways to relax mentally & physically. I found there were a lack of options in the city of Calgary. Especially ones that were affordable & convenient. I wanted to create an escape within the city. Somewhere our community could go on a weeknight to unwind & refuel for the week. A place where they could melt all there stress away and leave feeling rejuvenated, without having to leave town.
The spa also includes a Remedy bar which features cold flavours of Kombucha on tap. This is a great healthy way to treat yourself and add to your experience. We are a social spa so some come to catch up with others and some come to experience alone. There is a place for everyone looking to let go and live their best life!
Q: Tell us about when you decided to open the Cedar & Steam Spa, and how long that process took from start to finish?
I had come up with the idea for the Spa almost 5 years ago now. Developing the idea into a business plan while working a demanding full time job takes time. If you're doing it as a side hustle know that it might take years. The hardest thing was the financials. Sacrifices had to be made. The planning & getting my financials aligned took about 4 years. I announced the spa last February 2019.
Construction started last April 2019. I feel like last year is a bit of a blur. It is so rewarding watching something you've worked so hard to create be built. Especially when you designed every element, aspect & finish. I opened the spa doors in Aug 2019.
I had been open for 6 months when I closed the spa this year due to COVID-19. This is a difficult time for businesses all over the world.
Q: What advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs, and others in the spa industry?
I would say to other entrepreneurs that if you have an idea or a dream nothing is impossible. When I started dreaming of the idea almost 5 years ago I never thought it would actually happen. I just wanted something and kept working towards it. Dedication and perseverance, I think, play a big role. If I would have listened to the first person that shut the door in my face I wouldn't be here today. "No's" don't mean not to pursue your idea. They just get you to question it & maybe make adjustments. Just reflect and listen to your gut. If it tells you to keep going then keep going.
If you're new to owning a spa or managing a spa I would say culture and community are so important. Know that you are an example to your staff & guests at the spa. Lead and act as you want to be treated. I am still learning but developing this as I grow.
