Calgary Vacation Rental | Truly Independent

Giovanna, who is the owner of a short term rental property in Calgary describes her accommodation, and some of the challenges she encounters as an independent property owner.

Q: Share with us some information about your property, and what makes it an experience for guests?

My Bright Beltline Abode is a lovely urban condo located just blocks away from the bustling 17th Avenue. It's perfect for hockey fans wanting to see the Red Mile, outdoors enthusiasts wanting an urban basecamp for their adventures in the nearby Rockies, and executives needing a home away from home. The location is ideal for those who like accessibility: several grocery stores, bars, restaurants and cafes are within walking distance.

Q: As an independent property, what are some of the challenges you face?

Independent rentals are all about communication with guests. Welcoming people from all around the world can be hard work - there are often cultural and language barriers that must be handled gracefully. I have hosted guests from all over the world since my launch in 2016, including many New Canadians, and I feel proud to be a part of those peoples' journeys to Canada.

It can be challenging to run a rental property (especially a short-term rental) without deep pockets. Planning is essential, and having devoted friends and family who can help paint, fix broken sinks, (or help your guests turn on the tub when they can't figure it out) makes a world of a difference. Having a property manager can be extremely helpful if you're not able to dedicate the time it takes to run a short term rental.

Q: Are there any special amenities or “extras” that the vacation rental offers?

My property is a fully functioning home. This means there is a full kitchen (fridge, oven/stove, dishwasher) and a washer/dryer. On my walls you'll see my story: photos of my adventures and little touches that make this my home. Of course, the best part about the property is the location! The Beltline is a trendy, young, and lively urban neighbourhood.

Q: What advice would you give to those new to owning a rental?

Make a plan and get a team together. Do your research, or invest in a Property Manager (or Co-Host, on Airbnb). Having a successful rental property is all about keeping your guests happy, and you need to be prepared for anything. In my opinion, having a few people near your property that you can call (if you don't live nearby, or if you're travelling during bookings) has been extremely helpful for ensuring the good reviews keep coming. Even if something goes wrong, guests tend to be happy if the host is responsive - if they can't get a hold of you, even the smallest of issues overshadow all the great aspects of your property.
